According to a recent Rasmussen poll, Republicans and Democratic voters alike favor allowing first-trimester abortion. A Gallup survey reveals the highest number of Americans (55%) identifying as pro-choice since 1995. Today, Texas Republican Richard Finger announces the launch of www.RepublicansForProChoice.com, a 501 (c) (4) non-profit organization dedicated to shifting the conversation within the Republican party by promoting compromise as a means of finding common ground among Republicans and working towards solutions that respect both individual rights and the sanctity of life.
I founded Republicans For Pro-Choice for people who believe as I do. People who believe in a woman's right to choose. - Richard Finger
"I have three daughters," says Republicans For Pro-Choice Founder Richard Finger. "Three daughters who deserve the right to choose. As a lifelong Republican, I founded Republicans For Pro-Choice to provide a platform to connect like-minded Republicans across the country, facilitating open and honest conversations about reproductive rights and promoting policies supporting sensible reproductive healthcare access. I founded Republicans For Pro-Choice for people who believe as I do. People who believe in a woman's right to choose."
Republicans For Pro-Choice seeks the repeal the draconian Texas abortion statutes, which outlaw all abortion under penalty of criminal prosecution, even in cases of rape and incest. Furthermore, Texas has recently doubled down with a new legislative proposal effectively aimed at limiting free speech in the state by calling for a ban on websites that provide information about abortion. If passed, this possibly unconstitutional attack on free speech will not only severely impact women's rights, especially economically disadvantaged people who lack the resources to travel for an abortion.
Republicans For Pro-Choice is unique in its aims to bring Pro-Life and Pro-Choice Republicans under one roof. The organization's newly launched website features a range of resources for Republicans interested in advocating for reproductive rights and staying up to date on news and analysis of ongoing legislative anti-abortion campaigns across the nation, such as South Carolina's recently proposed bill that would allow the death penalty for women who get an abortion.
"Unfortunately, the Republican party is imploding within," says Finger. "As Republicans, we believe in less government, individual freedom, and personal responsibility. That includes the prerogative for women to make healthcare decisions without state interference. Since the repeal of Roe v. Wade, Democrats have done a masterful job of painting all Republicans as extremists. Yet most Republicans are moderate. Endorsing first-trimester abortion can hopefully prevail as a reasonable accommodation for all involved. The survival of the party depends on it."
Republicans for Pro-Choice invites all Republicans who believe in a woman's right to choose to visit www.RepublicansForProChoice.com and support this movement today.
